Treatment of Whiplash
Written by Jennifer Mooney
Registered Physiotherapist, MCPA, MAPA
If you have been in an accident and told by your doctor that you are suffering from whiplash, you will probably be referred for treatment to a physiotherapist.
On your first visit, the therapist will perform a very thorough assessment of your injuries and specifically document them. All areas that have restricted movement spasm, weakness or tenderness will be noted. These findings will also be sent to your doctor and placed in your chart. Updated reports will be sent to your physician during the course of your treatment.
The therapist will discuss these findings with you and answer your questions and concerns. You might even be given an anatomy lesson so that you have a better understanding of your condition. The therapist will also liaise on your behalf with ICBC so that you receive funding for your treatment.
Initially, the plan is to reduce your pain, stiffness and swelling. This is achieved by the therapist using a combination of specialized equipment and manual therapy. At the same time you’ll be given helpful tips about hot to manage your activities in the home or office. Then under the guidance of the therapist, you will be taught how to stretch and strengthen the damaged areas safely and effectively. All progress is documented in your chart but if problems do arise your doctor is immediately notified.
Most clinics have on-site gyms so that you can be taught the correct way to use equipment. When you are ready for discharge you will be given a home program of exercise to take with you. |
